This paper examines the reactions of the high clergy of New Spain to the implementation of the ecclesiastical subsidy in the Indies. From the study of an interesting correspondence between bishops and cathedral chapters is possible to know the different opinions that the new tax generated. Without doubt, the subsidy tested the loyalty of the clergy to the new reign of Felipe V and began a new phase in their relationship with the Indian Church.
