Santo, seña y ruta histórica del plátano hasta Cuba

The banana is not original of America. Its arrival in the New Continent dates back to the beginning of 17th Century, where it soon became a food commodity in areas such as Cuba and the Caribbean. Furthermore, in the Oriente area of the Island it found geographical and historical conditions that favoured its expansion for export purposes as from early 19th Century. This article analyzes the route followed by the banano tree to America and its trajectory and cultural assimilation in Great Antilla.El plátano no es oriundo de América; llegó al Nuevo Mundo a principios del siglo XVII, pero su uso alimentario se generalizó con rapidez en áreas como el Caribe y, particularmente, en Cuba. En una zona del Oriente de la esa isla, además, encontró condiciones geográficas e históricas que permitieron la expansión de su cultivo para la exportación desde principios del siglo XIX. Este trabajo analiza el recorrido del banano hasta tierras americanas y su trayectoria y asimilación cultural en la Gran Antilla
