Currently NASA is investigating the feasibility of hybrid-electric, solid oxide fuel cell power (SOFC) systems for generating electrical power for airborne propulsion and secondary/auxiliary power. As part of this project, researchers are investigating the performance of SOFC hardware in aviation-like environments, to establish the barriers, and potential suitability, of this technology. Immediate findings indicate the unsuitability of current SOFC stack architectures with regards to ease of manufacture, specific energy, as well as environmental and mechanical durability.
