The traditional design process of ceramic floorings, based on the manufacturing of prototypes, is a slow and expensive process, which reduce the productivity and creativity of the enterprises. A new approach to face this challenge is by means of virtual models, which offer the same information as a physic prototype at a very lower cost, when they are tested under manufacturing and quality simulations. The most used simulation technique is FEA (finite element analysis). In this paper we introduce the finite element method and summarize the main applications of these techniques in the general ceramic industry, and particularly in the ceramic tile sector.
