Herb Goodwin discusses his World War Two Service in the U.S. Army’s First Special Service Force, fighting in Italy and southern France from 1943 to 1944. He recalls training in the U.S. at various forts around the country, and leading an invasion on the Alaskan island of Kiska. Goodwin recalls the Force’s first official combat mission, Monte La Difensa, near Monte Cassino, Italy, before moving on to Anzio, Italy, and then on to southern France. He discusses the troops’ viewpoint on German forces, and racism in the Force, especially on the part of troops from the southern United States.
