John W. Hanes Interview, December 3, 1994

John Hanes recalls his career after serving in World War Two, when he worked with the Central Intelligence Agency [CIA], the State Department, and served as Assistant Secretary of State. He describes his involvement with the Boone and Crockett Club and his tenure as secretary in the 1960s. Hanes talks about his contribution to the decision to purchase the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch in Montana as well as the Club’s work with the Nature Conservancy. He discusses the Club’s records-keeping system, which he believes has created undue competition among Club members. Hanes recalls the early days of the club when it was a very small group of men trying to increase awareness for environmental conservation and how he feels that purpose has changed with the addition of new members and the Club’s subsequent expansion. He recalls certain transitions and adaptations the Club has undergone with the tenure of different presidents.
