Don Oberdorfer interviews Mike Mansfield in his apartment where they discuss the décor, the photographs on the walls, and the history behind some of the items. Mansfield talks about the current Senate and attending prayer breakfasts while the Senate is in session. He also discusses having recently attended a ceremony in Washington, D.C. for former Speaker of the House Tom Foley. Mansfield recalls serving as ambassador to Japan, and a letter that he sent to President Ronald Reagan advising him on how to handle Japan’s growing military.
