The book travellers

“The Book Travellers” is a mid-grade fantasy novel. The story takes place in Vancouver, where Mark lives and a parallel world called Mictan where Hailey lives. The story explores several themes through the adventures of these two main characters. The themes were chosen to be relevant and appropriate to children of mid-grade age. The fictional world serves as a vehicle to explore these themes. The main theme is the importance of family history. Throughout their lives Mark and Hailey have wanted information about their parents, who are dead, and about their family generally. In the end Mark and Hailey are revealed to be brother and sister and learn about their divided history. Family reunification ends the story. Related to the theme of family history is the theme of forgiveness. The action of the book is resolved when forgiveness is offered within and without the family. A third theme is concern and care for the environment. Mark is fascinated by the world of Mictan and how it is similar and dissimilar to his own. He learns to care for it deeply and wishes to explore it further. The disruption of the natural environment of Mictan has caused wars between families. The resolution of these wars is suggested at the end of the book. Mark suffers from panic attacks. Throughout the book Mark learns to deal with these by having to confront the various situations he’s exposed to. Personal experience and readings were used as the background to Mark’s attacks and his overcoming of them.Arts, Faculty ofGraduat
