This study will explore how action research could be used as a tool to improve a discussion-based teaching philosophy (Harkness) at an independent school as well as improve student skills in both Harkness and research. Action research was chosen as the methodology to implement change at the school, while a thematic analysis will be used to then explore the ways in which action research affected the participants in the group. It was found that through participation in an action research project, participants developed an increased sensitivity to Harkness, research skills, and were able to explore the learning environment they were engaged in through democratic discussions with one teacher-researcher.
