This study investigates literary representations of refugees in contemporary German literature. Specifically, it analyzes the autobiography Ich komm auf Deutschland zu (2016) written by a Syrian refugee, Firas Alshater, who arrived in Germany in 2013, and the auto-fictional novel Ohrfeige (2016) by the German-Iraqi author Abbas Khider, who sought asylum in Germany in 2000. Both authors write from a transcultural point of view which challenges the definition of German culture and its ostensible dividing lines.
