Vapor-liquid equilibrium study of benzene-propanol and benzene-pentanol

A study has been made of the vapor-liquid equilibria for the benzene-propanol and benzene-pentanol systems at atmospheric pressure using a Fowler-Gillespie still. Refractive index curves for the complete systems were also obtained at 25°C. Thermodynamic consistency of the results was checked with the Van Laar integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. This theoretical correlation of the experimental values showed an average deviation of approximately 10% between the experimental and theoretical values. A vapor-liquid equilibrium plot of the benzene-alcohol series from methanol to pentanol was made and the general shape of the curves was discussed with regard to the disappearance of the azeotrope.Science, Faculty ofChemistry, Department ofGraduat
