T-Shoshiri is a distributed operating system for developing and testing distributed software. It provides a flexible and extensive one-to-one (1-1) interprocess communication (IPC) facility. However a number of applications, such as notification and query, require the use of group communication in which a process sends a message simultaneously to a group of processes. This thesis discusses how the 1-1 IPC facility on T-Shoshin was extended to provide a group interprocess communication service. The notion of groups will first be described, focusing on how they are referenced, formed and maintained.
