HIV vaccine preparedness studies (VPS) are important precursors of vaccine trials, assessing the feasibility of such trials. This thesis presents a study of HIV vaccine preparedness, with a focus on the investigation of cognitive factors as predictors of willingness to participate (WTP) in preventive and therapeutic HIV vaccine trials. These cognitive factors include HIV treatment optimism, self-efficacy beliefs, and knowledge of HIV vaccine trial concepts. The introductory chapter covers HIV epidemiology, prevention measures including HIV vaccines, background information on HIV VPS and HIV vaccines, and a description of cognitive factors potentially associated with WTP.
