In this thesis we consider the records of students who graduated from British Cloumbia high schools, and who registered at U.B.C. for the first time in the 1977 fall term, including first-year calculus (Math 100) as one of their courses. Using canonical correlation techniques, we scale the Math 100 grades and the grade 12 mathematics grades. Other methods of multidimensional scaling are also considered. Analyses of variance are carried out to examine relationships between grade achieved in Math 100 and several-school factors, namely type of semesterization, Math 12 textbook, and geometry background for the 1976-77 high school graduating class.
