A structure exhibits a torsional response when subjected to an earthquake excitation. This response depends on the beating phenomenon and the eccentricity in an unsyitmetrical structure. A symmetrical structure may also exhibit a torsional response if a rotational earthquake excitation is present. A limit on the torsional response spectrum for an earthquake is determined. The importance of beating and of eccentricities are discussed in reference to the National Building Code.Applied Science, Faculty ofCivil Engineering, Department ofGraduat
