The concepts and methods of reliability theory have been developed to take into account intervening engineering uncertainties in modern engineering design. To achieve a certain performance an engineer must find design parameters which meet corresponding pre-set target reliability levels for the different limit states considered. Traditionally, this inverse reliability problem is implemented by means of "trial and error," using a forward reliability procedure and interpolating the design parameters at the desired reliability. This approach is inefficient and involves difficulties resulting from repetitive forward reliability analysis.
