Work is in progress at Power Systems Simulation Laboratory of The University of British Columbia to implement a computer-based general-purpose power system simulator called OVNI, for Object Virtual Network Integrator. In this report we present our contribution to this project, particularly, in the selection of hardware and software platforms, the specification of the simulation environment, and the implementation of the first development phase of such environment. Selection criteria to choose a common hardware platform for an electrical network solver with real-time performance, and a fully interactive interface are explained.
