This thesis examines the role played by cities in the People's Republic of China's (PRC) economic development and urbanization trends over the last 45 years or so, with special reference to uneven regional development and the growth of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SSEZ). The Chinese government has developed an extensive, modern external sector in the economy which has been actively implemented in fourteen cities along China's Pacific coastline and in the four Special Economic Zones. It has also opened three huge deltas in the Pacific coastal areas to further direct investment.
