The thesis investigates the life-cycle energy requirements of a generic office building. Energy use is seen as a key determinant in many of the most serious environmental pressures threatening human existence. Reducing current high levels of fossil fuel consumption is imperative as a first step to addressing and solving these problems. Energy use in the construction industry, to both operate and construct buildings, represents a significant portion of total global energy consumption and reductions in this component of total energy use will be essential.
