The regulation of gastrointestinal function is partly dependent on the intrinsic neurones of the gut. Intrinsic neurones contain a large number of neurotransmitters, including neuropeptides, in different combinations. Neurones have been grouped according to the combination of neurotransmitters they contain and this practice is called chemical coding.
