Recent evidence has indicated that adenosine, in addition to potassium and calcium currents, may also affect chloride movement in hippocampal neurones. This project was undertaken to determine the possible role of adenosine on chloride channels and synaptic plasticity in comparison with a selective GABA[A] agonist, muscimol. Extracellular recordings were made from the CA1 pyramidal cell layer of hippocampal slices in response to stimulation of Schaffer collateral fibres in stratum radiatum (0.01 Hz).
