Manger ou ne pas manger avec les étrangers ? Quelques observations concernant Genèse 43 et le roman Joseph et Aséneth

Were Jews and Gentiles able to eat together ? The biblical texts and extra-biblical writings of the Greco-Roman era do not give a clear answer to this question. This article, which focuses on the particular biblical figure of the patriarch Joseph, is concerned with the analysis of two texts in which Joseph plays the role of protagonist : the story of Joseph, especially in Genesis 43, and the novel Joseph and Asenath, a so-called “ inter-testamental” text. Although they have different contents, these two texts have in common the fact that they evoke the meals in which Joseph participated or did not participate, as well as the question of the legitimacy of meals which unite people of different origins.Les juifs et les non-juifs ont-ils pu manger ensemble ? Les textes bibliques et les écrits extrabibliques de l’époque gréco-romaine ne donnent pas une réponse claire et nette à cette question. Cet article, qui se focalise sur une figure biblique particulière, le patriarche Joseph, est consacré à l’analyse de deux textes dans lesquels Joseph joue un rôle de protagoniste : l’histoire de Joseph, en particulier Genèse 43, et le roman Joseph et Aséneth, texte dit «intertestamentaire » . Bien que de contenu différent, ces deux textes ont en commun d’évoquer des repas auxquels Joseph participe ou ne participe pas, ainsi que la question de la légitimité des repas unissant des personnes d’origine différente.Bons Eberhard.
