Were Jews and Gentiles able to eat together ? The biblical texts and extra-biblical writings of the Greco-Roman era do not give a clear answer to this question. This article, which focuses on the particular biblical figure of the patriarch Joseph, is concerned with the analysis of two texts in which Joseph plays the role of protagonist : the story of Joseph, especially in Genesis 43, and the novel Joseph and Asenath, a so-called “ inter-testamental” text.
