While the upshot of English colonisation in Ireland in the 16/17th centuries was the replacement of the old Gaelic legal system with that of the English ruling classes, the traditional bardic poets and brehon judges were not always hostile to the new English regime. Incoming noble families of non-Gaelic extraction were also known to have supported the Gaelic literati (a cultural assimilation going back to Anglo-Norman and even Viking times).
