Protestantisme et Révolution au Mexique, 1872-1911

The year 2010 is the centenary of the beginning of the revolutionary movement in Mexico, which overcame the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz (1876-1911). During his reign Protestant missionary societies from North America were admitted to this country, which had been closed to them before. The spread of Protestantism is first of all to be considered as a mobilization of endogenous players who did not only have religious motives. This development can be understood if one investigates the «Protestant societies » with other instruments than those of «missionary history » . A new reading of the sources shows that Protestantism created sociabilities which had both a religious and a political character. In this way it played a decisive part in the revolutionary upheaval.En 2010, on célèbre le centenaire du début du mouvement révolutionnaire mexicain qui renversa la dictature de Porfirio Diaz (1876-1911) durant laquelle des sociétés missionnaires protestantes nord-américaines pénétrèrent un pays qui, jusque-là, leur avait été fermé. La diffusion du protestantisme y est à lire avant tout comme une mobilisation d’acteurs endogènes dont les motivations furent loin d’être uniquement religieuses. Ce déploiement est à comprendre en construisant l’objet «sociétés protestantes » avec d’autres instruments que ceux d’une «histoire des Missions ». Il s’agit d’explorer une piste de lecture inédite en montrant que le protestantisme créa des sociabilités porteuses d’une culture religieuse et politique qui en fit un acteur décisif de la rupture révolutionnaire.Bastian Jean-Pierre.
