When the so-called «Huguenot Psalter » was first published in 1562, containing all the 150 psalms, its success was immediate and resounded in all Europe and abroad. However, none of these psalms, neither text nor melody, was written by Calvin himself, and no more he was the inventor of psalm singing practise, since the churches of Strasbourg and Basel practised it a long time before Geneva. Nevertheless it seems appropriate to speak of the «Calvin Psalter » , since all of this repertoire and this practise attests Calvin’s hand : the theological concept ; the exclusive choice of biblical texts ; the liturgical use ; the distinction between ecclesiastic and secular music ; the stylistic sobriety (in unison without instrumental accompaniment) ...
