Leaps, curses and flight : Suibne Geilt and the roots of early Irish culture

This paper contributes to the ongoing debate about whether early Irish culture is primarily Celtic, with an Indo-European background, or primarily the product of early Ireland’s encounters with Christianity and its Graeco-Roman inheritance. It pursues this question through exploring three intersections of early Irish culture with the form of Christianity that developed in Ireland. These intersections include early Irish beliefs and practices concerning flight, leaping, and curses, all of which occur against the backdrop of the huile which Suibne Geilt, in the Middle Irish saga Buile Suibhne, encounters. Buile itself may be understood in a variety of ways -as psychosis, as visionary experience involving the Otherworld, and as experience continuous with both possibilities. The pool of images and metaphors concerning curses, leaping, and flight in Buile Suibhne, and in the secular literature, sometimes has a similar meaning in the Christian literature and other times a different one. Thus, cursing has functions related to the Irish custom of satire and to the Christian process of excommunication ; images of flight and ascension also exhibit similar properties. Leaping, however, tends toward salvation in Christian materials and toward madness in the secular literature.Sauts, malédictions, et fuite : Suibne Geilt et les racines de la culture irlandaise ancienne. Cet essai est une contribution au débat actuel sur le caractère dominant de la culture irlandaise ancienne : est-elle principalement celtique avec des bases indo-européennes, ou bien est-elle surtout le produit d’une rencontre entre l’Irlande ancienne et le christianisme, avec ses héritages gréco-latins ? Dans cette recherche, l’auteur explore trois types de rencontres entre la culture irlandaise ancienne et la forme de christianisme qui s’est développée en Irlande. Il s’agit notamment des croyances et pratiques irlandaises anciennes concernant la fuite, le saut et les malédictions, trois phénomènes survenant en réaction à la buile dont souffre Suibne Geilt, dans la saga en moyen-irlandais Buile Shuibhne. Buile a d’ailleurs des sens variés : folie, expérience visionnaire impliquant l’Autre Monde, ou encore un état participant des deux premiers. Le stock d’images et de métaphores concernant les malédictions, le saut et la fuite dans Buile Shuibhne et dans la littérature séculière a dans certains cas le même sens que dans la littérature chrétienne, et un sens différent dans d’autres cas. Ainsi, la malédiction fonctionne tantôt comme la pratique irlandaise de la satire, tantôt comme le rite chrétien de l’excommunication ; les images de fuite ou d’ascension fonctionnent de même. Mais le saut se rapproche de la salvation dans la littérature religieuse, et de la folie dans la littérature laïque.Sailer Susan Shaw.
