Yttria stabilized-zirconia ZrO₂-Y₂O₃ 9 mole percent is used as a solid electrolyte conductor by O²⁻ ions in an electrolyte cell in order to measure the equilibrium potential of oxygen in minerals. Air, with P(O₂) = 0.2 atm. is taken as a reference. The oxygen pressure prevailing during deposition of a wolframite is so obtained. The equilibrium conditions between spinel and olivine from a cumulate is determined by measuring the chemical potential of oxygen in the minerals. The equality of the corresponding e.m.f. provides the assemblage temperature.
