A 200 kV analytical electron microscope (Hitachi-700H) has been used for quantitative chemical analysis with spatial resolution of a few hundred A. In specimens less than 1 µm thick, a linear relation between the counts of the characteristic X-rays of each element and the total counts has been shown to exist at 200 kV. The disadvantage of using 200 kV, instead of 100 kV, in the analytical mode, is the slight decrease in signal/noise ratio and the decrease of intensity of the characteristic X-rays from the light elements.
