Quartz can function as a paleodosimeter in the geological environment, and as such it monitors the movement of uranium and can reveal the location of uranium deposits. Of the common minerals, it is particularly useful in this regard because it is abundant, mechanically and chemically durable, compositionally more homogeneous than any other common mineral, and its thermoluminescence (TL) properties are relatively uniform. The TL properties of quartz which affect its use in studies of the migration of uranium deposits are discussed under four headings : 1) intrinsic variability, 2) variability due to the geological environment, 3) variability due to sample handling, and 4) variability due to analytical procedure.
