Jean-Pierre Beland : Catholic substance and Protestant principle according to Paul Tillich. This article puts forward the theologian Paul Tillich's formula «Catholic substance and Protestant principle» as a possible means of transcending the conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism, terms which express an alienation from true Christianity. The formula seeks to bring out the fundamental structure and essence of the Church of Christ, as it should be whether Catholic or Protestant. An analysis of the two poles, «Catholic substance» and «Protestant principle», shows how they call for and complete each other.Cet article propose la formule «substance catholique et principe protestant» chez le théologien Paul Tillich comme voie de solution pour dépasser le conflit entre catholicisme et protestantisme, deux expressions de l'aliénation du christianisme véritable. La formule vise à signifier la structure fondamentale de l'Eglise du Christ , son essence, comme ce qui devrait être tant dans le catholicisme que dans le protestantisme. C'est ce que montre l'analyse des deux pôles, «substance catholique» et «principe protestant», en faisant voir comment ils s'appellent et se complètent mutuellement.Beland Jean-Pierre.
