Does breastfeeding predict the child's cognitive or communicative development? a literature review

El momento de ingesta de leche materna permite interacciones verbales que contribuyen a la comprensión del lenguaje y su posterior producción. El desarrollo cognitivo del menor depende de este método de alimentación debido a los componentes nutricionales que intervienen en forma directa en el adecuado desarrollo cerebral (Ramírez-Gómez & Sampallo-Pedroza, 2017). El objetivo principal fue identificar la relación entre la lactancia materna y el desarrollo cognitivo - comunicativo que se genera en bebés lactantes y no lactantes en los primeros dos años de vida, por medio de una revisión sistemática de literatura. Se realizó esta búsqueda sistemática en las siguientes bases de datos: Academic Search Complete, Medline, ScienceDirect, Scielo y Scopus, en donde fueron seleccionados en total 8 artículos. En general todas las publicaciones coinciden en que los niños amamantados, obtienen un mejor puntaje en el IQ a los 6 y 12 meses de edad y demostraron mejor alcance de los hitos en cuanto al desarrollo cognitivo – comunicativo. Sin embargo, se requiere más investigación sobre el tema debido a que ante la revisión teórica exhaustiva que se realizó, se observó que existe investigación limitada respecto a este.The moment of breast milk intake allows verbal interactions that contribute to the understanding of language and its subsequent production. The cognitive development of the minor depends on this feeding method due to the nutritional components that directly intervene in adequate brain development (Ramírez-Gómez & Sampallo-Pedroza, 2017). The main objective was to identify the relationship between breastfeeding and cognitive-communicative development generated in breastfed and non-breastfed infants in the first two years of life, through a systematic review of the literature. This systematic search was performed on the following databases: Academic Search Complete, Medline, ScienceDirect, Scielo and Scopus, where a total of 8 articles were selected. In general, all the publications agree that breastfed children score better on IQ tests at 6 and 12 months of age and demonstrate better achievement of cognitive-communicative development milestones. However, more research on the subject is required because the comprehensive theoretical review that was conducted noted that there is limited research on the subject
