The article deals with the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of best practice research (BPR). First, the basic components of BPR are formulated and analyzed. Then two different approaches to BPR are reviewed and their pros and cons discussed. Then the general problems of BPR are considered along with the possible ways of getting over them. The article shows that currently there is nothing like a &ldquo;best practice of best practice research&rdquo; and argues that much has to be done in the development of BPR theory and methodology. It concludes with several recommendations for improvement (mixed research design, clear definition of purpose, focus upon mechanisms etc.)</p>
