The construction of referents through gender agreement in Brazilian Portuguese: a Cognitive Linguistics approach

O que motiva esta dissertação é investigar as contribuições da Linguística Cognitiva para descrever e analisar a construção de referentes no discurso a partir da observação da concordância de gênero gramatical no Português Brasileiro (PB). Se, por um lado, o gênero gramatical no PB pode ser compreendido a partir dos termos marcado e não marcado (cf. Câmara Jr 1975, 1972, 1966), por outro podemos fazê-lo corresponder às categorias feminino e masculino. A primeira terminologia implica que o sufixo a de palavras femininas (aluna, por exemplo) não seria uma marca de gênero, mas sim sua vogal temática. Não obstante, no PB, o gênero masculino e as noções de neutro e genérico i.e., gêneros que pretendem expressar, respectivamente, grupos formados por seres inanimados e por seres de diferentes sexos frequentemente apresentam a mesma representação morfológica, a terminação o. Essa coincidência pode ser afetada pela associação, feita por diversos falantes, de gêneros gramaticais a gêneros sociais. De acordo com o que identificamos nesta pesquisa, é plausível assumir que o sufixo o costuma ser lido como expressão de masculino, e o sufixo a, de feminino. Apesar dessa correlação frequente, o masculino genérico, originado na resolução de concordância, continua sendo empregado e ensinado como o único gênero adequado para referenciar grupos em que há a presença de fêmeas e machos. Todavia, essa prática tem sido gradativamente mais criticada por pessoas que optam por empregar novas formas de concordância de gênero em PB. Entre estas, encontram-se as chamadas linguagens não-binárias, que consistem na substituição do sufixo que indica gênero gramatical por símbolos que eliminam essa indicação, como em todxs e tod@s substituindo todos ou todas. Há também propostas que defendem a explicitação de sintagmas que estejam tanto no feminino quanto no masculino para referenciar grupos em que há integrantes de ambos os sexos. Essas diferentes estratégias são empregadas por grupos sociais também diferentes, algo que nos parece relevante para compreender os contextos de uso de cada uma bem como suas implicações linguísticas e sociais. Portanto, a fim de investigar o uso do masculino genérico e das formas linguísticas que se desviam dele, consideramos relevantes alguns fenômenos comumente estudados pela Linguística Cognitiva, conforme Steen (2016, 2017), Bybee (2010), Barcelona (2011), Langacker (2008, 2009), Ruiz de Mendoza Ibáñez (2000), e outros. Entre os conceitos previstos nesse horizonte teórico, foram especialmente úteis o da prototipicidade, o da gradiência, o da perspectivação e, sobretudo, os da conceptualização metonímica e da metáfora deliberada. Mediante esses referenciais teóricos, desenvolvemos a análise qualitativa de um corpus compilado durante a pesquisa e de dados experimentais obtidos em outros estudos sobre línguas românicas distintas. Com isso, identificamos que falantes tendem a não reconhecer que o masculino genérico inclui seres femininos na mesma proporção que reconhecem a inclusão de seres masculinos. Ademais, discutimos quando os usos dos gêneros gramaticais no PB se mostram influenciados por pressões metonímicas e quando o são por outros processos cognitivos, como o da metáfora deliberada. Por fim, procuramos relacionar o que identificamos na análise cognitiva ao que verificamos na análise sociológica e discursiva.The impetus for this dissertation is to investigate the contributions of Cognitive Linguistics to describe and analyze the construction of referents in discourse through the observation of grammatical gender agreement in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). If, on one hand, grammatical gender in BP can be understood by the terms marked and unmarked (cf. Câmara Jr 1975, 1972, 1966), on the other we can make it correspond to the feminine and masculine categories. The use of the first terms entails that the suffix a of feminine words (aluna, for example) is not a gender marking, but instead it is the thematic vowel of the word. Nonetheless, in BP, masculine gender and the notions of neutral and generic i.e., genders that intend to express, respectively, groups formed by inanimate beings and by beings of different sexes frequently present the same morphological representation, the ending o. This coincidence might be affected by the association, made by many speakers, of grammatical genders to social genders. According to what we identified in this research, it is plausible to assume that the suffix o is usually understood as an expression of masculine, and the suffix a, of feminine. In spite of this frequent correlation, generic masculine, originating from agreement resolution, is still used and taught as the only proper grammatical gender for referencing groups in which there are both females and males. However, this practice is being more and more criticized by people who prefer to use new forms of gender agreement in BP. Among these, there are the so called non-binary languages, which consist of the replacement of the suffix that indicates grammatical gender by a symbol that eliminates this referral, like in todxs and tod@s replacing todos and todas. There are also proposals that sustain the explicitness of feminine as well as masculine noun phrases in order to make reference to groups in which there are members of both sexes. These different strategies are used by different social groups, something that seems relevant for us to understand the usage contexts of each one of them, as well as its linguistic and social implications. Therefore, in order to investigate the use of generic masculine and the linguistic forms that divert that type of masculine gender, we consider relevant some phenomena usually studied in Cognitive Linguistics, in accordance with Steen (2016, 2017), Bybee (2010), Barcelona (2011), Langacker (2008, 2009), Ruiz de Mendoza Ibáñez (2000), and others. Among the concepts provided by this scientific framework, prototypicality, gradience, perspectivation, and mainly metonymic conceptualization and deliberate metaphor were especially useful. Using these theoretical references, we made a qualitative analysis of a corpus compiled during this research and of some experimental data obtained in other studies of different Romance languages. Thus, we identified that speakers tend to not recognize that masculine gender include female beings at the same rate that they recognize the inclusion of male beings. Furthermore, we discuss when the uses of grammatical genders in BP might be influenced by metonymic pressures and when they influenced by other cognitive processes, such as deliberate metaphor. Lastly, we tried to relate what we identified in our cognitive analysis to what we verified in our sociological and discursive analysis
