Fitness on Instagram: A good-looking body or a healthy body and mind? : - A multimodal critial discourse analysis of body ideal versus health benefits of exercising in fitness-influencers posts on Instagram

The female body ideal has above all been represented by thinness since the beginning of the 20th century. Earlier research indicates that the female ideal of beauty is reproduced and enhanced through media, but there is a research gap according social mediaand body ideal. Anja Hirdman argue that the Western ideal of beauty is represented by the young, slender, tight body and that there is a discourse that encourages women to work with and control their bodies to not be seen as repulsive. The thin ideal is combined with an expectancy of a fit and firm body since 2010: this combined ideal is as hard to attain as the solely thin body, which in turn can result in a negative body image and feelings of guilt. So even though exercising can cause a lot of positive aspects, both physical and psychiatric, it can also lead to negative effects. By this premise and the existing research gap concerning social media and body ideal, this study will focus on how current body ideals versus health benefits of exercising manifests among influencers on Instagram. What is more important: a good-looking body or a healthy body and mind? This will be answered through a qualitative study where the multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) is applied on a total of 21 posts on Instagram, from seven different influencers who focus on fitness, exercising and health. MCDA is used in order to be able to analyze picture and text in relation to each other and also in order to analyze if the posts contain an underlying ideological discourse. The theoretical framework includes female body ideal, the male gaze, our society in which consumerism makes us all products to market and sell, the two step flow theory, media’s power, and theories concerning qualitative textual analysis and visuality. The result show that current body ideals manifest among all posts by these influencers, even though in different degrees. The health benefits of exercising also manifests, although not as often and in some cases the posts lexical choices manifest these health benefits while the visual choices rather manifest the importance of having an ideal body. Sedan 1920-talet har det kvinnliga kroppsidealet framförallt handlat om smalhet. Tidigare forskning visar att det kvinnliga skönhetsidealet reproduceras och förstärks via medier, dock finns det luckor i forskningen kring sociala medieroch kroppsideal. Anja Hirdman menar att det västerländska mediala idealet representeras av den unga, slanka, stramt konstruerade kroppen och att det finns en diskurs som uppmuntrar kvinnor att arbeta med och kontrollera sin kropp för att inte ses som motbjudande. Sedan 2010-talet kombineras det smala idealet med en förväntan på en vältränad och fast kropp: ett ideal som kan vara lika svårt att uppnå som den enbart smala kroppen vilket kan leda till kroppsmissnöje och skamkänslor. Det finns alltså negativa effekter av att träning nu tillhör det rådande idealet, trots att träning i sig självt kan generera många fördelar, både fysiska som psykiska sådana. Med bakgrund av detta och den lucka som existerar kring just sociala medier i förhållande till ideal, kommer denna studie att fokusera på hur rådande kroppsideal kontra hälsofördelar med träning avspeglas hos influencers på Instagram. Är en snygg kropp eller ett välmående inre viktigast? Forskningsfrågan lyder: Hur avspeglas rådande kroppsideal kontra hälsofördelar med träning i meddelanden som sänds ut från svenska kvinnliga fitness-influencers?Den besvaras genom en kvalitativ studie där den multimodala kritiska diskursanalysen (MCDA) används för att analysera totalt 21 inlägg från Instagram, från sju olika influencers med fokus på fitness, träning och hälsa. MCDA används för att kunna analysera bild och text i ett inlägg i relation till varandra och för att kunna undersöka huruvida inläggen innehåller en underliggande ideologisk diskurs. Det teoretiska ramverket utgår från kvinnliga kroppsideal, den manliga blicken, det konsumistiska samhället där vi alla deltar och själva är varor, tvåstegshypotesen, mediers makt och teorier kring kvalitativ textanalys och visualitet. Resultatet visar att rådande kroppsideal avspeglas i samtliga influencers inlägg, även om detta syns i olika grad hos olika influencers. Hälsofördelar med träning avspeglas också, dock inte lika frekvent och i vissa fall avspeglas hälsofördelar med träning i inläggets lexikala val medan de visuella valen snarare avspeglar vikten av en kropp som passar in i dagens ideal.
