Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including the two main types, Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is characterized by chronic, relapsing inflammation of the gut mucosa with considerable impact on the quality of life. At present, the therapeutic management of CD is not curative and one third of patients fails to respond to current biologicals and immunosuppressive drugs.
