The methodological choices made for a qualitative research project on language teachers' conduct are discussed in retrospect. The linguistic and pedagogical aspects proper to institutional language teaching settings are set aside; the focus is on the researcher and the teachers' collective endeavour to characterize teaching as complex, situated, social performance. The cumulative process of methodology conception, data collection and analysis, is characterized as an evolving cycle.
