International audienceThe study of ornaments made out of minerals has concerned a quite abundant material : some 35,000 objects registered in more than 200 sites in southern France. Despite the great variety of raw materials (about 40), we can observe a very preponderant use of talcum, then of limestone and calcite. All other materials are more scarce. Some rocks, present in several regions, have been used preferentially in some, such as fluorite in the Languedoc and bauxite in the Var and Grasse areas. Such minerals as talcum may have been circulated over various distances, from the Pyrenees and perhaps the Alps. Others like turquoise and variscite are of remote origin.
