The Byzantine Empire, like other medieval states, never possessed a written official constitution summarizing the basic organization of its government. The Christian Roman Empire was considered to be an imitation of the Kingdom of Heaven. According to the Byzantine theory, the source of all authority in the universe, both religious and secular, was God. The emperor was elected in principle. Generally, the Senate, the army, and the people co-operatively selected the emperor. Once an emperor was enthroned, there was no constitutional way to depose him.
