The electrical properties of ceramic varistors based on the ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 system are related to the complexity of its polycrystalline microstructure. ZnO grain growth is controlled by the presence of a spinel type secondary phase, whose formation depends upon the homogeneity of the system and the presence of other minority dopant oxides. The present study has focused on materials of identical composition but using MnO2 of different particle size, and the evolution with temperature of the crystalline phases has been followed.
