This paper presents the evolution of protocol MMAC-CR (Multichannel MAC protocol for Cognitive Radio). To this end, we analyze the advantages of the protocol and we study the operational activities that pertain to cognitive radio where the medium access control protocol plays a very influential role, namely spectrum mobility, channel sensing, resource allocation, and spectrum sharing. Moreover, we describe the variations of the MMAC-CR protocol according to the negotiation and reservation mechanisms implemented
