The planning of eye care programmes requires data on the prevalence and causes of blindness. Unfortunately, programme planning is often hampered by the lack of data, because no surveys have been conducted in the area or the surveys are too old to be relevant. Programme planners are often reluctant to plan surveys, as they are believed to be expensive, time-consuming, and complicated. The Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) has been developed as a simple and rapid survey methodology that can provide data on the prevalence and causes of blindness.
