Clemente de Alejandría dedica el fragmento comprendido entre las secciones 12 y 22 del segundo capítulo de Protréptico a la crítica de los misterios griegos. Aunque a primera vista esa refutación se dirige a una serie de cultos independientes, el autor toma a Orfeo y al orfismo como puntos de convergencia entre los distintos cultos y cimientos para la construcción de una realidad unitaria que pueda oponerse de modo claro y directo al cristianismo.
