This essay presents two contributions of the Amartya Sen to the debates over ethics and economics. First, his break with utilitarianist and welfarist ethics -the foundation of normative economics- and his call to modify the metrics of utility, the only 'field of information' that these normative traditions use to judge individual and social welfare, that is, people's opportunities, the impact of public policies and the<br />success of social organizations.
