Se describe e ilustra a Euphorbia spellenbergiana como especie nueva. Pertenece al subgénero Chamaesyce y se distingue fácilmente de las especies parecidas por tener los estilos sin dividir y estigmas capitados. Es endémica de México y se distribuye desde la parte centrooccidental de Chihuahua hasta el norte de Michoacán. Aunque ampliamente distribuida, tiene un hábitat altamente específico; prospera solamente en el suelo húmedo de charcos temporales en bosque de pino-encino, pastizal y matorral crasicaule, entre 2100 a 2600 m
