GANGGUAN REPRODUKSI PADA TERNAK SAPI BALI YANG DIPELIHARA OLEH PETERNAK SKALA KECIL (A preliminary study)

The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence of reproductive disorders in Bali cattle. The study was conducted in Bantaeng Regency; South Sulawesi Province. A total of 111 Bali cattle both heifers and cows from three different villages were examined in the present study. Clinical examination by palpation per rectum and vaginoscopy was conducted to determine the reproductive status. Trans-rectal palpation of the genitalia was performed to assess ovarian structures and uterine conditions. The results of this study showed that out of 111 animals, there was 36.9% became pregnant after repeated inseminations or with natural mating, and the others (63.1%) were not pregnant due to various statuses. Of the 70 animals that did not become pregnant, 13.5% were normally cyclic, and 0.9% each had normal cyclicity, however they were suffering from nymphomania and metritis, respectively. The remaining 47.7% animals were suffering from inactive ovaries. The incidences of inactive ovaries within 85 days and beyond 85 days after calving were 47.3% and 72.7%, respectively. In conclusion, high incidence of reproductive disorders was found in Bali cattle. Inactive ovaries were the major reproductive disorders in Bali cattle, and in turn, delayed the onset of estrus and subsequently reduced reproductive performance
