STUDI UJI PERFORMANS TERNAK SAPI BALI DI KABUPATEN BARRU, SULAWESI SELATAN (PRELIMINARY STUDY)

This study was a preliminary test and was conducted to evaluate the\ud performance of Bali cattle that aimed to obtain the description of breeder stock that\ud potentially can be developed. This study was done in four villages in Barru regency; one\ud of the regions for purification of Bali cattle in South Sulawesi. The study was conducted\ud using 2,570 heads of Bali cattle during a period from July to December 2009. Out of\ud 2,570 Bali cattle, there were 51.7% cows, 2.1% bull, 21.9% steer, and 24.3% heifers. A\ud total of 1,431 Bali cattle (55.7%) were selected for performance test with the average of\ud age was 5.33 years old ranging from 2 to 13 years and body weight was 229.34 kg\ud ranging from 164 to 318 kg. The results of this study showed that the ratio between bull\ud and cow was 1 : 24.6. As conclusion that the performance of Bali cows based on\ud physical exterior measurements were still potential to be developed. However, it is\ud necessary to involve some more bulls and/or intensive application of artificial\ud insemination in order to increase breeding frequency
