The author discusses the scattering of medium energy pions by nuclei in anticipation of an increase in intensity of about three orders of magnitude from the meson factories. It is shown that pion scattering at around 200 MeV is not likely to vary revealing except in two respects:- (i) the scattering problems itself, and (ii) simple spectroscopy of double charge exchange, which reactions allow the study of the energy states of strange nuclear species such as /sup 5 /Be and /sup 18/C. Nuclear properties will be more easily extracted from low energy (50 MeV) pion scattering and, in the case of high momentum properties, from high energy (2 GeV) scattering. (18 refs)
