Linear superposition of responses of a structure to different load cases delivered by linear analysis methods can be used to obtain its response to any linear combination of those load cases. this way extreme response values can be investigated when the magnitudes of the interacting loads ( their load factors) vary within specified ranges. The load factors can be regarded as the co-ordinates of a combined load case in a vectorial load space.
