This note gathers the existing information on the parameters of the CMS silicon microstrip detectors, in order to compute the signal-to-noise ratio for different configurations. Both signal and noise are computed analytically, starting from laboratory measurements of the characteristic impedances of the detectors. Results are presented for a 50 micron strip pitch detector, read out every strip and every second strip, and for a 100 micron pitch detector read out every second strip
