Detailed studies on the sweet immunity concept (according to which sugars are involved in disease resistance and multi-stress tolerance in plants) at the whole plant level are missing and much confusion arises from the literature whether sweet immunity is linked tosucrose signaling, hexose signaling, or both. This situation will be clarified in this project by careful comparison of the effect of different types of sugars at different doses during exogenous application on rice (a monocot species) and tobacco (a dicot) plants. Exogenous sugar supply stimulates the defense responses, and leaf apoplastic sucrose levels may control a sucrose-specific signaling pathway potentially involved in multi-stress tolerance in plants.
